The ADA, with President Brett Kessler at the helm, has a strong focus on enhancing dentists’ wellbeing.  They have implemented many programs to help support us on this journey (ADA.org/ resources/ practice/ wellness).

Among them is the Well- Being Index (WBI). (ADA.org/Well-BeingIndex)  This confidential set of 7 questions was created by the Mayo Clinic and can be used to track your wellbeing over time.  The questions ask about burnout, worries, physical health, emotional overwhelm, meaningful work and work life balance.  Based on your responses they then provide you with targeted resources to help.

TalkSpace Go is another ADA member benefit (ADA.org/TalkSpaceGo).  This therapy app is self-guided and allows you to choose modules and/or classes on work stress, relationships, communication, emotions, triggers, finding purpose, boundaries, depression, financial stress, and conflict management.  It can also connect you with TalkSpace Therapy where you can work with a licensed therapist.

The ADA also provides information on suicide prevention, ergonomics, stretches and more mental health resources.

The DC Dental Society is offering a Member Assistance Program through AllOne Health for members, their families and staff members (Member Assistance Program).  This confidential service provides access to counselors/ therapists on topics ranging from stress, anxiety, relationships, life coaching, financial consultations, referrals for legal matters, work-life balance, caring for family members, managing everyday tasks and medical advocacy.  They provide articles, assessments, podcasts and resource locators.

For those members in crisis there are resources available through the Physicians Health Program (https://www.msdc.org/healthyphysicians/php) and the Maryland Dentists Wellbeing Committee (https://dentistwellbeing.com/).  You can also call 988, the suicide and crisis lifeline.

Small modifications in my personal life have made an impact on my wellbeing.  I take 10 diaphragmatic breaths after my alarm goes off before I get out of bed in the morning.  I often take a walk during lunch to get some time outside in nature.  I have found truth in Moby's quote "Music is one of the healthiest forms of transcendence and magic".  I search for Ikigai, the Japanese term for purpose or reason for living.  I look for ways to calm my limbic system, eat well and connect with others.

May we find friendship and support in our community here at DCDS.

In closing, here is a poem by Jolene Gutierrez.

When feelings go on overload

I pause and breathe

And all is... slowed

Wishing everyone well!
