D.C. Dental Society Awards

The D.C. Dental Society recognizes the contributions of individual members and community leaders through its esteemed awards which are presented at the Society’s annual awards dinner held the first Tuesday of June. Below is a list of the awards given.

Sterling V. Mead Award

The Sterling V. Mead Award is given annually to an active, active life or retired member of the Society in good standing who has made distinguished contributions to the dental profession and/or has devoted their life to organized dentistry. This may include outstanding contributions to (1) the DC Dental Society and/or the ADA, (2) the dental profession, (3) dental education, (4) dental or oral health research and (5) civic organizations that support oral health.

The award is named after Dr. Sterling V. Mead, a distinguished dentist, past D.C. Dental Society member and author who wrote several books on dentistry between 1935 and 1954, including Oral Surgery, Diseases of the Mouth and Anesthesia in Dental Surgery.

Committee Member of the Year Award

This award is presented to a DCDS member who has distinguished themselves through their work on a Society committee in one or more of the following ways: (1) innovation, (2) perseverance over an exceptionally voluminous work load, (3) exceptional success as a direct result of his or her efforts, (4) demonstration of exceptional leadership engaging others in committee work. Nominations for this award are made by a majority vote of a Society committee. This award is not be given annually if no candidates meet the award criteria.

Special Recognition of a Member

This award is presented to a DCDS member who has brought recognition to the Society, the profession, or themselves through their contributions or concrete accomplishments in one or more of the following areas: (1) public service, (2) heroism, (3) altruism or similar activities and (4) dental research and/or education. This award is not given annually if no candidates meet the award criteria.
