Past Monthly Meetings

The DCDS offers regular, complimentary CE programming to its members each year between September and May. Monthly meetings are usually on the second Tuesday of the month (depending on holidays and other events). In addition to learning the latest innovations and techniques in dentistry from world-renowned speakers from across the country, DCDS monthly meetings give attendees an opportunity to share ideas, information and network with one another. Nonmembers may attend DCDS monthly meetings for a small fee.

Presentation Description:

Recent evidence confirms strong association between skeletal jaw deficiencies and compromised airway function with increased anatomic risks for OSA and upper airway resistance. Orthodontists and dentists play critical role in screening, diagnosing and treating jaw deficiencies related to compromised breathing. In this webinar we will focus on the review of the latest innovations in skeletal treatment modalities of OSA such as MARPE non-surgical expansion, MMA surgery, genioplasty and oral appliance therapy. 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the role of dentists and orthodontists in the interdisciplinary screening, diagnosis, and management of patients with airway dysfunction and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
  2. Identify 3 indications, benefits, and clinical considerations associated with oral appliance therapy for the treatment of OSA.
  3. Compare current non-surgical skeletal treatment modalities for OSA, including maxillary expansion techniques for pediatric and adult patients.
  4. Evaluate surgical skeletal treatment options for OSA, including maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) and other airway-focused surgical interventions.

Biography of Dr. Marianna Evans:
Dr. Marianna Evans is board certified dual specialist in Orthodontics and Periodontics practicing in the Greater Philadelphia area. She is the founder of Infinity Dental Specialists, an interdisciplinary practice focusing on orofacial development, periodontal, and airway health. She received her DMD and specialty training at the University of Pennsylvania. To serve her patients better she recently joined the University of Pennsylvania Sleep Surgery Department as adjunct professor. Dr. Evans divides her time between her busy practice, teaching, and conducting research on the relationship between oral and systemic health. She lectures internationally on maxillary skeletal expansion (MSE), guided facial and airway development as well as periodontal plastic surgery.
