Infection Control: From Theory to Practice

Meeting the infection control needs of every dental practice should not be an overwhelming process. An understanding of the applicable laws, prevention techniques and a common-sense approach can produce a simple effective, ongoing program that protects patient and providers alike. A review of current research will provide a scientific basis for infection control policies.

Understanding the required protocols and procedures that would be evaluated during a compliance inspection will be included. The course is designed to help satisfy the annual training requirement for MOSH compliance as well as provide infection control continuing education credits required for DC dental renewal of license.

This course will familiarize the participant with the information needed to comply with both the OSHA and Infection Control Guidelines and regulations. The participant will be able to put the theory into practice in his/her office. This course will foster the participant’s ability to think critically and effectively in order to apply the knowledge into practice to keep his/her patients and staff safe and healthy.

  • List topics for protocols and policies every Dental Exposure Control Plans needs to have
  • Understand the inspection process for infection control compliance
  • List methods to protect patients and staff
  • Prepare a post-exposure protocol based on current infectious disease tests and treatments
  • Recognize employer and employee compliance responsibilities

Lori Serna-Pate RDH, M.Ed. is a native New Yorker who has spent more than three decades in a dental setting. Her passion for Infection Control stems from her interest in microbiology and infectious diseases. Microbiology was her first passion, having come of age during the HIV global epidemic. She majored in Microbiology at SDSU in California. During her senior year at SDSU, while working in a diagnostic lab, she realized that her true passion was helping others and so in 1997 she graduated from Loma Linda University as a Dental Hygienist.

Being a clinician enabled her to merge her passions together and so she became the OSHA lady wherever she practiced. In the Summer of 2015, after working in Saipan, a small island in the North Pacific Ocean, as a DH for 15 years, she moved back to the East Coast. Working with dental professionals in various training, inspired her to receive her master’s in education in 2006.Her desire to educate and assist dental professionals with the intricacies of Infection Control and Regulatory Compliance led her to calibrate with Dr. Mulreany in the Fall of 2017. This allowed the ability to continue to provide individual office evaluations (Compliance Analysis), staff OSHA trainings, and group infection control continuing education seminars. Ms. Serna-Pate’s Infection control seminars are approved by the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners as well as the Academy of General Dentistry. She has presented at MAGD’s annual meeting as well as MSDA and other Dental Societies and Organizations.

This course’s aim is to communicate the regulations and standards in an engaging manner, sharing practical solutions to theoretical infection control challenges is the key behind the information given. It is her goal to become an infection control resource to all the dental professionals who are interested in following the I.C. regulations and standards and are looking for support and guidance in that endeavor. She continues to be involved in the clinical setting by working at Howard Community College as an adjunct clinical DH instructor. She serves the DC Dental Board as an inspector and is a member of ADA, ADHA, and OSAP (Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention).

Ms. Serna-Pate lives in Columbia, MD with her husband, with three children in college and one still at home as well as four pets, she keeps busy. She enjoys traveling, reading and working with her clients to make every dental visit as safe as possible.

Embracing Diversity, Inclusion and the LGBTQ Community

This Course aims to develop culturally competent oral health care personnel that can provide dental services to diverse populations in an inclusive environment, especially LGBTQ patients, through provision of humanistic care that addresses issues of quality, access, equity and adherence.  Participants will learn to use proper communication while applying basic concepts and emotional intelligence. Recognize biases, stereotypes and demonstrate cross-cultural skills.


Learning Objectives:

  • Identify key dimensions of patient-centered care and the important role played by humanism and communication in developing a therapeutic alliance with patients.
  • Define Humanism, Culture, Cultural Competence and culturally effective oral healthcare.
  • Recognize the types of issues/challenges that are particularly important in caring for patients of diverse cultural backgrounds and the LGBTQ communities.

Dr. Chaviano Moran is Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, RSDM, Associate Dean for Admissions and Associate professor in the Departments of Periodontics and Community Health. Her focus is inclusivity, diversity, equity and educational excellence. Her roles as faculty and administrator have led to considerable contributions to dental education at the local, national and international levels.

She is the Director of RSDM Internationally Educated DMD Program, dental pathway programs; K-12 and college level. Principal Investigator for the “Creating Awareness in Academic Dentistry” grant, RSDM Faculty Advisor for both, Hispanic Student Dental Association and the Dental Association for Equality (providing advocacy in the LGBTQ student, staff and faculty community). Nationally selected to American Dental Education Association, ADEA Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee, past president of the Hispanic Dental Association as well as the Board of Directors of the Diverse Dental Society. Memberships include American Dental Association, Fellow in both the American College and the International College of Dentists. In 2022, she received the ADEAGIES award for institutional VISION for her work with the LGBTQ student community. She is co-author for the MetLife’s Quality Resource Guide Caring for LGBTQ+ Individuals in Dental Practice.

Herminio L. Perez, DMD, MBA, EdD received his dental degree from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, followed by a General Practice Residency at Bronx Lebanon Hospital. After residency, he continued the Hospital affiliation as a faculty and Site Administrator in the Department of Dentistry. Dr. Perez received his MBA in Healthcare Systems from the Silberman College of Business, Fairleigh Dickinson University, N.J.

In addition, Dr. Perez received his doctoral degree in education with a concentration in Leadership and Innovation from the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.

Dr. Perez serves as the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, Diversity & Inclusion, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine.

In addition to his academic and administrative responsibilities, he is a member of the Diversity Leadership Council at Rutgers Biomedical Health Sciences, where he co-chairs the sections of the Antiracist Taskforce and the RBHS University-wide Diversity Strategic Planning Process. In 2021, Dr. Perez was appointed as a Member of the American Dental Association Board of Trustees' Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Dr. Perez has been an active member of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and has served as Chair of the Student Affairs/ Financial Aid Section (AFASA). Currently, he holds the position of Councilor for the ADEA PRIDE Section, Chair-Elect of the ADEA Leadership Institute Alumni Association Board (ADEA LIAA), and Chair-Elect of the American Dental Education Association Annual Session Program Committee (ADEA ASPC).

 

Dental Ethics and Ethical Decision-Making Models

By the end of the session, attendees will be able to differentiate between ethical dilemmas and moral weakness, distress and uncertainty. The necessity for and value of ethical decision-making models to resolve moral dilemmas will be recognized, as opposed to relying solely on one’s worldview, instincts, emotions, traditions, and etiquette.

Four ethical dilemma cases will be analyzed and solved utilizing different decision-making frameworks throughout the presentation. 

Additionally, we will define Ethical Principles, Vulnerability, Paternalism, Benevolent Deception, and Informed Consent. 

Course Learning Objectives:

  • Review the definitions and applications of Ethical Principles in Dentistry, with a special emphasis on Autonomy vs. Paternalism
  • Explain Benevolent Deception and its applicability in solving moral dilemmas
  • Identify vulnerability and appreciate the additional layers it presents in dental populations
  • Differentiate between Ethical Dilemmas, uncertainties, distress and weakness
  • Gain a new understanding of how to assess and analyze dental ethical dilemmas based on specific frameworks instead of instincts and culture
  • Gain a new appreciation for the doctrine of Informed Consent upon reviewing its history

Dr. A-KingAbout Fotini Anagnostopoulos-King
Dr. Fotini V. Anagnostopoulos-King was born and raised in Greece. She finished high school in England, received her Bachelor's degree from Ohio University and D.M.D. from Tufts School of Dental Medicine. She completed an Advanced General Dentistry residency at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. Dr. Anagnostopoulos-King recently obtained a graduate certificate in Research Ethics at the University of Maryland Graduate School and is currently pursuing a Certificate in Professionalism at the Academy for Professionalism in Health Care. 

She worked as a general dentist in the private sector for 20 years and joined the University of Maryland School of Dentistry as a Clinical Assistant Professor nine years ago.

Dr. Anagnostopoulos-King loves international film, ethnic music, traveling with family and friends, reading, writing and swimming. 

 

Opioids and Analgesic Prescribing for the Dentist

This two-hour presentation will start with a discussion about the nature of the opioid crisis and how dentists play an important role in the in the genesis and control of opioid misuse.  The bulk of the talk will focus on current concepts in analgesic prescribing and potential complications when prescribing opioids, NSAIDs and acetaminophen, concluding with specific recommendations for several different situations.

Dr. LuceAbout Ernest Luce
Ernie Luce DDS completed a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Texas Tech in 1981, a dental degree from the University of Texas at Houston in 1985 and a one year General Practice Residency at the University of Texas in San Antonio in 1986. Since then, he has held a full or part time position in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry in San Antonio working mostly with the Graduate General Dentistry Residents. His primary focus is to teach the dental management of medically compromised patients, management of medical emergencies in the dental office and the delivery of moderate parenteral sedation in the dental office.
